With temperatures constantly on the rise lately, it is important for us to stay hydrated. Some of you might know, fruit-infused water is all the rage right now. And for a good reason! Infusion is simply the process of extracting chemical compounds or flavours from a plant/fruit into a solvent (water). Notice that when you squeeze a lemon peel, you’ll see (and smell) a fine mist of fragrant oil. These compounds in fruits bring nutritional benefits like weight control and help to increase our overall metabolism.
Fruit-infused beverages are really easy to make. Simply let the fruit slices/herbs steep in a pitcher of water for about 30-45 minutes and you are ready to go! I tend to stick to a pretty standard combination of citrus fruits like lemons, limes and oranges to get that zesty feeling on a really hot day. Alternatively, if you wish to enjoy your water on the go, there are a couple of specially made bottles sold in the market. I recently purchased this 28oz one by “Zing Anything” for only $10! It comes with the citrus press which doubles up as a filter. Squeeze, close the cap, overturn and fill with water. That’s it!
Some of my favorite tried and tested recipes are:
- Lemon slices + Mint
- Strawberries + Mint
- Blueberries + Lime slices
Sometimes, for some added sweetness, I’ll also include a teaspoon of honey. Go on and soak up the sun and some healthy water this summer!
